HANGING AND PRESERVING FRAMED PICTURES AND PRINTS




Prints are produced on Fuji acid-free archive, fade-resistant paper with a lustre finish. During framing they are mounted (unless otherwise stated) in single or double mounts in colours to compliment the work. The backs are sealed and a means of hanging is provided, usually brass eyelets for the addition of cord or wire. The finished product should give many years of enjoyment and last for decades.



A notable problem sometimes seen in framed works is the rippling of the print (known as cockling). This is primarily due to changes in temperature and humidity, and over a period of time the picture buckles. Even the most expertly framed pictures may buckle in certain conditions but it is most commonly seen in older works subjected to heat and cold extremes, or in home framing as a result of flawed methods. Dry mounting and laminating prints largely overcomes the problem.



The hanging of pictures themselves is pretty straightforward but cavity walls and tough masonry walls can prove difficult. Fortunately these days there are various options to avoid drilling and hammering. With very heavy frames it is good practice to use two mounting points for added security and to reduce stress on the frame.




For best results:-


Hang pictures out of sunlight and bright light sources. Whilst a print may not exhibit fading, frames and mounts can be affected by light over time, and there is also the reflected glare to consider.


Avoid hanging framed pictures on outer walls if any dampness is evident, or in bathrooms where humidity is high, as print or backing damage may result.


Keep pictures away from heat sources such as radiators and convector heaters which can warp frames, backings and create print rippling.


Store framed pictures upright - never flat, sideways or upside down.


Store large prints flat rather than rolled, and handle prints with particular care to avoid fingermarks and creasing.


Keep prints in relatively stable temperatures, avoiding lofts and basements where temperature and humidity extremes are likely.
